Two-day Aneto (3,404 m) ascent from the Benasque Valley

Prepare a guided two-day Aneto ascent from Benasque, approaching the Renclusa before a long summit and descent day. The route combines high-mountain ground, snow or glacier according to conditions and the exposed final Paso de Mahoma. Describe recent ascents and technical equipment experience to assess the programme, arrange the refuge and prepare for the full return.

Experience and preparation

Preparation must match a demanding ascent rather than a short introductory walk. Previous mountain outings and summits, good endurance and comfort with exposure are recommended. If your background differs, discuss an assessment or preparatory outing. Tell us about recent long days and technical equipment experience when booking.

Programme and itinerary

Day one includes meeting in Benasque, introductions, equipment checks and travel to La Besurta. The approach to Renclusa is listed as 1.5 kilometres with about 260 metres of ascent and approximately 1.5 hours of activity. The hut night helps organise the following day, but its cost is not included.

Day two proposes Renclusa–Aneto–La Besurta. Published figures are 13 kilometres, around 1,275 metres of ascent and 1,500 metres of descent, with eight hours of effective walking and up to approximately twelve hours of activity. These are indicative figures: the guide adapts progression and route to conditions and the group. Reaching the summit is not guaranteed.

Arrangements and equipment

The package lists a high mountain sports technician, the stated technical and safety equipment according to season, initial assistance insurance, advice and photographs or video. Participants’ and guide’s accommodation and meals, transport and bus tickets for guide and clients when the service operates are excluded. Bring boots suitable for snowy mountain terrain, clothing and spare gloves, headtorch, sunscreen, food and water. Ask about ice axe, crampon, helmet and harness loans and their compatibility with your equipment before travelling.

Questions to help you plan

How are the two Aneto days organised?

Day one covers the Benasque meeting, kit review and approach from La Besurta to the Renclusa. Day two follows Renclusa–Aneto–La Besurta, including summit and full descent.

What distance and elevation changes are listed for summit day?

Around 13 km, 1,275 metres of ascent and 1,500 of descent, with eight hours of actual walking and up to around twelve hours of activity. These references are adapted to the group and mountain conditions.

What experience and comfort with heights do I need?

Mountain and ascent experience, good stamina and comfort with exposure are recommended. Paso de Mahoma is exposed; discuss concerns and ask about assessment or preparatory activity if needed.

Are refuge stays and buses included?

Accommodation and meals for participants and guide, transport and bus tickets when operating are excluded. Confirm reservations and costs before travelling.

What kit and group size are listed?

May–October, for one to four people at a high level. Prepare snow-appropriate boots, clothing, spare gloves, headtorch, food and water; ask about ice axe, crampons, helmet and harness and compatibility.

Check availability and plan your booking

Read all the programme details and contact us if you are unsure whether your experience matches the route. The main challenge is sustained effort and accumulated ascent and descent, particularly on the way down. Altitude can increase fatigue, while wind and low temperatures add to the difficulty.

Previous mountain walking and summit experience are recommended. If you are new to this type of outing, the guide can assess your level or suggest a preparatory ascent.

Prepare with endurance exercise and mountain walks, carrying a loaded backpack and using the footwear and equipment you will take on the trip. Break in new boots beforehand. The route does not require technical rock-climbing skills, but you must be comfortable with heights and exposed passages.
