Two-day traverse of the Vignemale 3,000-metre peaks

Traverse nine summits above 3,000 metres in the Vignemale massif with a guide over two days, combining the Bayssellance approach with a summit and descent day. Petit Vignemale, Chausenque, Pique Longue and the Montferrat sector form part of the objective on the French side of the Pyrenees. This high-level programme requires ascent experience, stamina and comfort with exposure to organise snow or glacier conditions, rocky sections and the return towards Ossoue.

The route is on the French side of the Pyrenees, around Gavarnie, Ossoue and the Vignemale massif.

The nine Vignemale summits

The programme proposes the following summits, with reference elevations. The passes along the route are not counted as summits.

  • Petit Vignemale (3,032 m)
  • Épaule Chausenque (3,154 m)
  • Pointe Chausenque (3,204 m)
  • Piton Carré (3,197 m)
  • Pique Longue (3,298 m)
  • Clot de la Hount (3,289 m)
  • Cerbillona (3,247 m)
  • Pic Central (3,235 m)
  • Montferrat (3,219 m)

Experience and preparation

Previous ascents, physical endurance and comfort with exposed passages are recommended. The route combines the approach, glaciated or snowy terrain depending on conditions and rocky sections. Ask about a preparatory assessment if needed. The summit total is the advertised objective, not a guarantee that every peak can be linked in any weather or terrain conditions.

Programme and itinerary

Day one proposes a meeting around 14:00 and an approach to Bayssellance. The overnight stop helps prepare for the following day’s early start. The programme lists a 06:00 departure on day two and names Petit Vignemale, Épaule and Pointe Chausenque, Piton Carré, Pique Longue, Clot de la Hount, Cerbillona, Pic Central and Montferrat.

Col des Glaciers (2,990 m) and Col Lady Lister are passes on the route, not additional summits. The proposed descent uses the Montferrat lakes area towards Barrage d’Ossoue. Confirm the final variant, access and current conditions before finalising the trip.

Arrangements and equipment

Two guiding days, accommodation arrangements, collective equipment and required listed technical items are included, with needs agreed beforehand. Personal accommodation and meals, travel to the meeting point and the guide’s accommodation and meals are excluded. The indicative expense allowance is €100 per person; request an updated budget. Bring boots suitable for snow and compatible with crampons, clothing, headtorch, 45–50-litre backpack, food and water. Ask about ice axe, crampon, helmet and harness loans, insurance cover and any hut equipment needed.

Questions to help you plan

Check availability and plan your booking

Read all the programme details and contact us if you are unsure whether your experience matches the route. The main challenge is sustained effort and accumulated ascent and descent, particularly on the way down. Altitude can increase fatigue, while wind and low temperatures add to the difficulty.

Previous mountain walking and summit experience are recommended. If you are new to this type of outing, the guide can assess your level or suggest a preparatory ascent.

Prepare with endurance exercise and mountain walks, carrying a loaded backpack and using the footwear and equipment you will take on the trip. Break in new boots beforehand. The route does not require technical rock-climbing skills, but you must be comfortable with heights and exposed passages.
