Ice climbing course in the Spanish Pyrenees: ALPI 2

Introduction to Ice Climbing Course (ALPI 2) — BEGINNER · 2 DAYS

Discover waterfall ice climbing on a two-day ALPI 2 course based in Jaca. Develop movement, ice protection, belays and rope techniques in the Aragón, Tena or Pineta valleys, choosing the practice area according to conditions and participants’ abilities.

This introduction to ice climbing is for people with previous mountain skills. You need good physical condition and must have completed ALPI 1, or lead rock routes at grade IV and have experience in an ice couloir of 60–70° (AD). Contact us if you are unsure which course matches your experience.

From movement to waterfall climbing

  • Step cutting, all-points crampon technique, front-pointing with one ice axe and climbing with two technical ice tools.
  • Ice and natural anchors, rope belays, quick protection and belay stations.
  • Roped progression with half ropes, moving together and abseiling.
  • Approach planning, ice formation and types, difficulty grading, route descriptions and specific equipment.

The aim is to develop independence on icefalls while reinforcing mountaineering and risk-management knowledge. The first day covers movement and protection; the second puts these techniques into practice on icefalls suited to the conditions and the group.

Location, dates and timetable

Jaca is our base and has classroom facilities. We travel to the Aragón, Tena or Pineta valleys; the broader Bielsa area may also be used according to conditions. Contact us to agree dates that fit your availability. The stated group size is 1–6 people, with departures guaranteed from two participants. Difficulty: medium.

Meet at 08:00 on both days at our Jaca office or the agreed meeting point, then travel to the practice area. The course finishes at about 15:00 on Sunday.

Equipment and booking

Technical ice axes and crampons, helmet, harness and avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe are included if needed. Rigid or semi-rigid mountaineering boots are compulsory and are not included. The personal kit list also specifies two technical ice tools, at least semi-automatic crampons and a personal anchor tether; ask us about equipment loans.

Two full days with a qualified high-mountain sports technician, initial assistance and civil liability insurance, photographs/video and technical advice are included. Accommodation, meals and transport are not included.
