Ossau high route: four days linking Midi d’Ossau, Palas and Balaitús

Link Midi d’Ossau, Palas and Balaitús with PirineoSur on a four-day high route. This outing combines hut-to-hut travel and summit ascents, starting at Portalet and finishing the walking route at La Sarra.

This high route links three summits and several huts between the Ossau and Tena valleys. Preparation combines the effort of consecutive days with technical rock and snow passages, making both important before travelling. Describe experience with scrambling, ropes and crampons to agree on the route and equipment with the guide. Arranging the final transfer from La Sarra to Portalet completes the traverse’s logistics.

  • Season: mid-June to late September.
  • Location: Ossau and Tena valleys.
  • Duration: four days.
  • Group: one to four people.
  • General level: medium-high.

Experience and preparation

This is a demanding route with days exceeding 1000 metres of ascent and descent. Requirements describe grade IItoIIIclimbing, rope use and 45° to 50° snow. Regular mountain experience and confidence on exposed terrain are needed; discuss your background before booking.

  3. Palas–Respomuso. Day three ascends Palas, 2,974 m, and continues towards Respomuso.
  4. Balaitús–La Sarra. Day four ascends Balaitús, 3,144 m, and descends to La Sarra. The programme provides for a transfer to Portalet: confirm its arrangements and cost.

Terrain and conditions shape each stage. This four-day outing links ascents and huts; discuss experience and equipment with the guide before booking.

Ask about dates and plan your outing with PirineoSur.

This physically demanding four-day route requires regular mountain experience. Some days involve more than 1,000 m of ascent and descent. Summit approaches include roped sections, grade II–III climbing and snow slopes of 45–50°. You must be comfortable with heights and exposed passages. Altitude can further increase fatigue.

The main demands are accumulated ascent and descent, especially on the way down, and fatigue over successive days. Wind and low temperatures may add to the challenge. Read the full programme and contact us if you are unsure about your level.

Prepare with endurance exercise and mountain walks using a loaded backpack, the boots and the equipment you will take on the trip. Break in new boots beforehand. Tell us before the activity about any heart condition or other relevant health issue so that the guide can take it into account.
