Technical Monte Rosa: Lyskamm ridges and Dufourspitze

Link Monte Rosa ridges on a six-day technical mountaineering programme with a guide, following a preliminary Chamonix meeting. The Breithorn ridge, Pollux and Castor, the Lyskamm and Zumsteinspitze–Dufourspitze areas form very-high-level objectives. Prepare your snow, ice, rock and exposed-terrain experience to organise consecutive altitude days and assess the route for conditions.

Summits and reference elevations

The programme proposes the following objectives. Elevations provide a reference for altitude; conditions and the group’s preparation determine which ascents are possible.

  • Castor (4,223 m)
  • Lyskamm East (4,532 m)
  • Zumsteinspitze (4,562 m)
  • Dufourspitze (4,634 m)

Experience and preparation

Mountain experience, very good fitness, basic climbing and crampon skills on slopes around 50 degrees are required. This is a level 3 Alpine ascent programme. Participants must manage their equipment and sustain consecutive days at altitude. Discuss your specific background before confirming the booking.

Programme and itinerary

The indicative day-0 meeting is from 18:00 in Chamonix. Day one transfers to Cervinia and the hut near Plateau Rosa. Day two proposes the Breithorn ridge towards Guide d’Ayas; day three links Pollux and Castor towards Quintino Sella. The sequence provides a progressive approach to the later objectives.

Day four proposes the Lyskamm ridge and continuation towards Margherita. Day five aims for Zumsteinspitze and the ridge towards Dufourspitze before descending to Zermatt. Day six returns via Klein Matterhorn and Cervinia to Chamonix. Ridge and glacier conditions may require changes; no summit is guaranteed.

Arrangements and equipment

Six guiding days, hut arrangements, collective equipment, required listed technical items and internal transfers to activity starting points are included. Personal accommodation and meals, lifts and the guide’s detailed expenses are excluded. The indicative expense allowance is €500 per person; request an updated budget. Bring rigid boots, ice axe, crampons, helmet, harness, clothing and hut equipment. Confirm insurance cover, the train and lift budget and the services for each stage.

Check availability and plan your booking

Mountain experience, very good fitness, some climbing knowledge and crampon technique on slopes of around 50° are required.

Long Alpine days require strong endurance. Altitude, successive days of activity, wind and low temperatures can increase fatigue and difficulty. Read the full programme and ask us if you are unsure about the required level.

Prepare with endurance exercise and mountain walks, using a loaded backpack and the boots and equipment intended for the trip. Break in new boots beforehand. Previous long mountain days, ideally including a 3,000 m summit in the Pyrenees, are useful preparation. You must be comfortable with exposed terrain and heights. An assessment outing with one of our guides can help confirm whether the route suits you.

Level 3 Alpine programme

This progressive programme combines guided mountain routes with technical coaching, helping you improve your skills and make the most of your time in the Alps. Acclimatisation and preparation are built into the itinerary.

Mountain experience, good fitness and familiarity with technical equipment are required. Previous experience on an Alpine 4,000-metre peak provides a useful foundation. Ask us about preparation courses.

Your guide

Participants must have the physical and technical ability to move independently under the guide’s supervision. One high mountain guide accompanies one or two participants, knows the route and gives daily instructions according to conditions and safety considerations.

PirineoSur works with highly qualified professionals with extensive mountain experience and more than 30 years of professional activity in the Alps. They hold the qualifications required in Alpine countries including France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland.

Guided mountaineering helps manage the risks and makes it easier to enjoy your trip, but no mountain activity is entirely risk-free.
