Five-day beginner ski touring course in the Spanish Pyrenees

Five-Day Beginner Ski Touring Course — BEGINNER · 5 DAYS

Build your ski touring foundations with PirineoSur over five days in the Tena and Aragón valleys, based in Jaca. Two days of ski technique around a ski area lead into three mountain outings, supported by theory on snow, equipment, navigation and first aid.

No previous ski touring experience is required. You should already be able to descend blue and red pistes using basic parallel turns.

What will you learn?

  • Ski technique: work on balance, body position, movements and turns for unprepared snow, with video feedback.
  • Uphill travel: use climbing skins and crampons, practise basic steps, gliding, changes of direction and kick turns.
  • Snow and avalanche awareness: read the avalanche danger scale and bulletins, practise transceiver searches and consider how the group should move through the terrain.
  • Route planning and navigation: use maps, compass and GPS, consider the 3×3 planning framework and prepare an outing.
  • Mountain skills: learn introductory ice-axe, crampon and self-arrest techniques, and discuss first aid, requesting help and helicopter signalling.

Five days of practical progression

The first two days focus on downhill technique in a ski area. The following three days apply uphill, avalanche, navigation and mountaineering skills on straightforward mountain outings with moderate slopes. Teaching takes place in small groups and can be adapted to the participants.

The course is offered from January to May. Contact PirineoSur with your preferred dates, and read the detailed programme, requirements and equipment list below.

Who is this course for?

Alpine skiers or ski tourers who want to discover ski touring through personalised teaching and straightforward ascents in the Pyrenees.

No previous ski touring experience is required. You must be able to descend blue and red pistes using basic parallel turns.

If your skiing needs further work, we can offer downhill technique lessons on piste. The instructor can then assess whether you are ready for the course.

If you are unsure about your level, call us or contact PirineoSur for help choosing the most suitable course.

Day 2: downhill turns, equipment and route preparation

  • Warm up and practise turns commonly used in ski touring on slopes with undulations and moguls, selecting turns according to the situation.
  • Video recording for feedback on technique.
