Monte Rosa High Route: the summer mountaineering Spaghetti Tour

Experience the guided Monte Rosa High Route, or Spaghetti Tour, linking four-thousand-metre peaks, glaciers and refuges over five summer mountaineering days on foot. After a preliminary meeting in Zermatt, the route crosses Breithorn, Pollux, Castor and the Lyskamm and Gnifetti areas before the final descent. This high-level programme needs mountain, crampon and rock experience; describe previous ascents to agree objectives and group progression.

Summits and reference elevations

The programme proposes the following objectives. Elevations provide a reference for altitude; conditions and the group’s preparation determine which ascents are possible.

  • Breithorn (4,164 m)
  • Pollux (4,092 m)
  • Castor (4,223 m)
  • Naso del Lyskamm (4,272 m)
  • Balmenhorn (4,167 m)
  • Vincentpiramid (4,215 m)
  • Corno Nero (4,321 m)
  • Ludwigshöhe (4,342 m)
  • Parrotspitze (4,434 m)
  • Signalkuppe / Punta Gnifetti (4,553 m)
  • Zumsteinspitze (4,562 m)

Experience and preparation

The level 2 programme requires mountain experience, good fitness, basic climbing and crampon technique on slopes around 40 degrees. Ice axe and crampon handling and comfort with exposure are essential. Previous experience of an Alpine four-thousander is useful. Describe recent outings to assess suitability; the programme guarantees neither independence nor every summit.

Programme and itinerary

The indicative meeting is from 18:00 on day 0 in Zermatt at the agreed point. Day one uses Klein Matterhorn, with Breithorn as a summit objective and an overnight stay at Guide d’Ayas. Pollux is planned only on day two, along with Castor, before the night at Quintino Sella. The guide adapts ascents to conditions and the group’s pace.

Day three proposes Naso del Lyskamm, Balmenhorn and Vincent Pyramid towards Gnifetti. Day four links the Corno Nero, Ludwigshöhe and Parrotspitze area with Margherita; day five proposes Zumsteinspitze and descent to Zermatt. These are route objectives rather than guaranteed ascents in every terrain condition.

Arrangements and equipment

Five guiding days, accommodation arrangements, collective equipment and required listed technical items are included by agreement. Hut costs and meals, travel, internal transfers, lifts and the guide’s stated expenses are excluded. The indicative expense allowance is €500 per person; request an updated budget. Bring rigid boots, ice axe, crampons, helmet, harness, clothing and hut equipment. Ask about insurance and all costs before booking: arranging a reservation does not automatically include the accommodation price.

Questions to help you plan

Is the Monte Rosa High Route completed on skis?

This page is for summer mountaineering on foot in July–August. It covers five route days plus a preliminary meeting, rather than a ski tour.

How are the first two days organised?

After day 0 reception from 18:00 in Zermatt, access via Klein Matterhorn leads to Breithorn and a night at Guide d’Ayas. Pollux is proposed only on day two, together with Castor, before Quintino Sella.

Which objectives follow towards the high refuges?

Naso del Lyskamm, Balmenhorn and Vincent Pyramid lead towards Gnifetti. Corno Nero, Ludwigshöhe and Parrotspitze follow towards Margherita, with Zumsteinspitze and descent to Zermatt on the last day.

What experience does level 2 require?

Mountain experience, good fitness, basic climbing, crampon technique on slopes around 40 degrees, ice axe skills and comfort with exposure. Describe previous four-thousand-metre peaks and recent practice to assess the programme.

Is Dufourspitze included in this route?

It is not among this page’s scheduled objectives. Any variant needs agreement before booking, with the preparation and organisation it requires.

Are refuges and lifts paid for?

Accommodation is arranged, but refuge stays and meals, travel, internal transfers, lifts and stated guide expenses are excluded.€500 per person is an indicative estimate to update in the quotation.

What group and kit are listed?

One or two people. Five guiding days, collective and requested technical kit from the list are included; prepare rigid boots, ice axe, crampons, helmet, harness, clothing and refuge equipment and discuss insurance and full costs.

Check availability and plan your booking

Mountain experience, good fitness, some climbing knowledge and crampon technique on slopes of around 40° are required.

Long Alpine days require strong endurance. Altitude, successive days of activity, wind and low temperatures can increase fatigue and difficulty. Read the full programme and ask us if you are unsure about the required level.

Prepare with endurance exercise and mountain walks, using a loaded backpack and the boots and equipment intended for the trip. Break in new boots beforehand. Previous long mountain days, ideally including a 3,000 m summit in the Pyrenees, are useful preparation. You must be comfortable with exposed terrain and heights. An assessment outing with one of our guides can help confirm whether the route suits you.

Level 2 Alpine ascents

Follow normal routes that are more technical than those in our level 1 programme. Mountain experience, good fitness and familiarity with technical equipment are required. Previous experience on an Alpine 4,000-metre peak is useful; ask us about preparation courses.

One high mountain guide accompanies one or two participants, knows the route and gives daily instructions for each stage. PirineoSur works with highly qualified professionals with extensive high mountain experience and more than 20 years of guiding in the Alps. Their qualifications meet the relevant requirements in Alpine countries, including France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland.

A guide helps manage the risks so you can enjoy the trip, but no mountain activity is entirely risk-free. Please read the adventure activity contract carefully.

You must know how to use an ice axe and crampons.
