Guided Monte Rosa tour: six trekking days between Switzerland and Italy

Walk around the Monte Rosa massif with PirineoSur on a tour linking valleys, passes and a stage across the Theodul glacier. The programme starts at Saas Almagell and finishes its walking route in Zermatt, with travel at the beginning and end.

  • Season: June to September.
  • Destination: Switzerland and Italy.
  • Duration: eight days, including six trekking days.
  • Group: four to ten people.
  • Listed general level: low.

Experience and preparation

The general level does not remove the demands of consecutive days walking with a pack. Requirements include mountain experience, good fitness and six- to ten-hour days with substantial height gain and loss. Review the specific itinerary figures and prepare with walks using similar boots and backpack.

Programme and itinerary

The initial meeting is from 18:00. Six stages link Mattmark and Monte Moro with Macugnaga, Alagna Valsesia, Staffal, Saint-Jacques, Theodul hut and Zermatt. The programme lists substantial ascent, such as+1730 metres on the Staffal stage; review each day as well as the general level.

Before booking, confirm the meeting, equipment and allocation of meals and accommodation. This is a staged tour: consider the whole itinerary and your preparation for repeated days of effort.

Equipment and arrangements

Seven guide days, seven nights with breakfast or half-board according to the stage, the Saas Almagell–Mattmark transfer and accident insurance are included. Travel to the meeting, lunches, dinners outside huts, drinks and extras, and transport after leaving the route are excluded.

A hut-to-hut trek around the Monte Rosa massif

The trip explores different sides of the massif through valleys and passes between Switzerland and Italy. Prepare for sustained effort, carrying a pack and each stage’s elevation changes. Describe recent hikes and experience of long days. Confirming accommodation, meals and the glacier stage with the team helps organise equipment and travel to Saas Almagell.

Frequently asked questions

Do we climb the summit named in the tour?

This is a tour through valleys and passes, rather than an ascent of the massif’s summit.

Are all meals included?

No. Check the board basis of each night and exclusions for lunches, certain dinners, drinks and extras.

Do I need walking experience?

Yes. Good fitness and mountain experience are required for successive long stages with height gain and loss.

Is the Monte Rosa Tour six or eight days?

The advertised trip lasts eight days with six trekking days. The listed services include seven guiding days and seven nights under the board arrangements detailed for each stage; confirm the full arrival and return schedule.

What fitness does this trek require?

Mountain experience, good fitness and the ability to walk six to ten hours with a pack are required. The Staffal stage lists around 1,730 metres of ascent; review each day as well as the general low difficulty label.

Does the route include a glacier stage?

Yes. The itinerary includes the Theodul glacier before finishing on foot in Zermatt. Confirm the equipment and specific arrangements for that stage when preparing the trip.

Where does it start and which transfer is included?

It starts in Saas Almagell, with the initial meeting from 18:00. The Saas Almagell–Mattmark transfer is included; travel to the meeting point and transport after leaving the route are excluded.

Discuss your outing and availability with PirineoSur.

This trek follows mountain trails and crosses passes rather than climbing summits. Previous mountain-walking experience and good fitness are required for stages with 800–1,300 m of ascent and descent and 6–10 hours of activity.

Prepare in the weeks before the trip with mountain walks using a similar backpack and the same footwear as on the Tour du Cervin. Aim for 800–900 m of ascent and descent. If mountain outings are not possible, aim for at least three exercise sessions a week. Read all the programme details and contact us if you are unsure about your ability.

Groups have a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 10 participants, accompanied by a mountain guide familiar with the route. The guide briefs the group each day and adapts the pace to the least fit participant. We have the whole day to complete each stage at a relaxed pace. An assessment outing with one of our guides is available if you would like advice on your suitability.
