What you need to bring

• Sleeping bag with a comfort rating of −5 °C or lower.
• Waterproof Gore-Tex jacket and trousers, or equivalent.
• Down or PrimaLoft insulated jacket.
• Winter hiking trousers.
• Thermal base layer and a spare.
• Socks and spare pairs.
• Thin and thick gloves.
• Warm hat, sun cap, sunglasses and ski goggles.
• Backpack of around 45 litres, large enough to fit all your equipment inside.
• Headtorch and spare batteries.
• Sun protection for face and lips.
• Water bottle or hydration bladder with a capacity of at least 1.5 litres.
• Flask, preferably 0.5 litres.
• Freeze-dried or similar food for one dinner and one breakfast.
• Trail food for two days: bars, gels, nuts, dates and similar snacks.
• Small personal first-aid kit and toiletry bag.
• Lightweight sandals for the hut.
• Power bank for charging your phone.

Equipment we can lend you

• Snowshoes and poles.
• The guide will carry a stove for boiling water only. Bring freeze-dried meals or food that can be prepared simply by adding boiling water.

No previous mountain experience is required. You simply need an interest in learning to use snowshoes and a taste for adventure. If you are unsure which outing suits you, contact us and we will help you choose the appropriate level.

Meet at 09:00 at the PirineoSur office or the point requested when booking, then travel to the start.

Day 1: Pico Malacara and Col d’Astún, with an overnight stay in the unstaffed part of Ayous hut.

A two-day snowshoe journey to the Ayous lakes

Explore the Ayous lakes area on a two-day winter trip, heading towards Malacara and spending a night in the unstaffed part of Ayous refuge. Discover this mountain landscape on snowshoes and experience an overnight winter hut stay.

• First day: head towards Malacara peak and the col de Astún, then continue to Ayous refuge.
• Second day: return towards Astún via the col del Monje and the ibón de Escalar.
