Pic Gran Vignemale 3,298m, Pic Petit Vignemale 3032m,
This demanding three-day trek explores the Vignemale massif, the Cirque de Gavarnie and its great waterfall, the exposed Échelles des Sarradets route to the hut, and the Brèche de Roland on the French–Spanish border. On day two, we aim to climb Petit Vignemale (3,032 m), the highest point of the trek.
Each day involves more than 1,000 m of ascent. Day two also includes around 2,000 m of descent; a taxi from the Barrage d’Ossoue may shorten the stage if needed. Regular mountain experience and good fitness are essential.
The route may change according to the weather and the group’s level. The summit is optional depending on fatigue, timing and the group’s wishes. It involves an easy but exposed ridge. Technical rock-climbing skills are not required, but confidence on mountain terrain is important. Your guide will also introduce the area’s history and legends.
The main demands are accumulated ascent and descent, especially on the way down, and fatigue over successive days. Wind and low temperatures may add to the challenge. Read the full programme and contact us if you are unsure about your level.
Prepare with endurance exercise and mountain walks using a loaded backpack, the boots and the equipment you will take on the trip. Break in new boots beforehand. Tell us before the activity about any heart condition or other relevant health issue so that the guide can take it into account.
